What you need to know about GYNs + Menopause
Finding a GYN is hard no matter what. #truth
Finding a GYN for your menopause-related issues is even harder. #wecandohardthings
I have innumerable stories from my women friends who all have had the same, damn experience -- frustrating and unhelpful.
My own experience a few years ago just MORE OF THE SAME. I was experiencing some bizarre pain in my lower vagina and vulva (yes, I said it). Turns out it was not that bizarre just perimenopause related. It was bizarre enough for me to want to see a GYN about it.
Turns out my experience was just ANOTHER example of frustration, confusion, dismissal and utter uselessness at the GYN's office. 🤬 I might as well have been in a doctor's office in the 70s (see picture above)
Here are the three crappy statements, I mean the "support and care" I ultimately got:
1️⃣ All women are different so we don't know why these symptoms are happening and we don't even really know what is happening to you (implying also that they were not interested in finding out)
2️⃣ You're just gonna have to suffer because it happens to all women (read: you're on your own, dear).
3️⃣ We can't (won't?) do anything for you except, we can give you a prescription for pain meds, if you want them (uh, hello?! remember the raging opioid addiction crisis in this country?).
In this FB Live, we dig into the current state of affairs in gynecology today, why menopause matters are not a priority for GYNs, how best to navigate this unwelcoming landscape and arm yourself with knowledge and confidence to deal with the status quo in the clinic.
