Definitionally, it is the point in time when a woman no longer menstruates. It is conventionally measured after 12 consecutive months without a period. However, like puberty, menopause is a multi-year transition where a woman’s hormonal profile fundamentally shifts from one profile to another. The transition has distinct phases:¹⁰

  • Perimenopause (essentially when things start to go haywire)
  • Early post-menopause (when the periods have stopped and your body is finding its way to the new normal)
  • Later post-menopause (when your body has found its new normal.)

Commonly, symptoms arise at perimenopause and early post-menopause. Some women have symptoms, some do not. If you are experiencing symptoms bad enough to impact your daily life, that’s a sure sign changes are afoot and it’s time to do something about it.

When

The average age of menopause is 51 in the US and the UK. More or less. Because we lack good data, all we can say is it generally starts in the 40s and ends in the 50s. Some articles say that average years of symptoms is 7ish, some say that symptoms can last more than 15, some say 4-5 years after the last period. And perimenopause lasts on average 4 years.
There will always be outliers. Piecing it all together, it’s safe to say that symptoms start in a woman’s mid 40s, periods stop around 50 and symptoms can persist for about 5 years after that.

  

When do you know? When symptoms start to show up. Typically in perimenopause, period cycles shorten, periods get heavy (they call it “flooding” for a reason) and more emotional volatility occurs (anxiety, depression, anger). ¹⁰

Innovation with heart.

Women at midlife have not been researched extensively. We are misunderstood and under-appreciated. Yet, we are increasingly an essential and powerful part of society as mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, wives and former-wives, widows, employees, managers, senators, CEOs, philanthropists, activists, scientists and visionaries. Five years ago, I began having painful and persistent symptoms.

When I explained the mystery soreness to my gynecologist, he gave me a blank stare. It's ‘probably just menopause’ and stressed he really did not know what was wrong. A few weeks later my symptoms were worsening and I was told “there’s nothing we can do for you.” Beyond feeling frustrated, a lightbulb went off for me: the medical establishment did not know how to handle menopause. I was approaching fifty and the conventional narrative of menopause felt archaic.

I grew up with a world class Tiger Mom. I went to University of Mich Engineering School, MIT Business School, and combined my love of wellness and business into a chain of yoga studios, a yoga training company, and a 4-Star wellness resort in Thailand. MIGHTY is my way if saying, we can approach Menopause with heart, we can innovate with heart. And we can change the conversation around this topic to push us forward, not keep us stuck in the past.
